What is Skin Needling?
Skin needling, also known as collagen induction therapy is one of the most versatile treatments we offer at Aatman Wellness & Medispa. Skin needling aims to tighten, lift and rejuvenate skin. The Dermapen™ can visibly improve the appearance of :
- fine lines
- surgical, acne and trauma scars
- stretch marks
- …and much much more!
How Does Skin Needling Work?
Skin needling is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that involves the use of a micro-needling device to create controlled skin injury. As each fine needle pierces the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin in the dermis. This treatment results in reduction of scars and skin rejuvenation.
Benefits of Skin Needling
Skin needling is effective in treating many different skin conditions including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Premature skin ageing
- Stretch marks
- Sunspots and hyper pigmentation
- Enlarged pores
Skin needling combined with serum infusion can bring about great results.
What Should I Know About This Treatment?
Skin needling is generally well tolerated. It can take from a few minutes up to an hour to complete, depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem. On the day of the treatment, a numbing cream can be applied to the skin for more comfort. A course of 3-5 treatments is recommended depending on the condition being treated with an interval of 4-6 weeks between treatments.
After the treatment, your skin is likely to be red and appear similar to sunburn. However this usually subsides in 24 hours. The skin may also feel very dry post treatment but can be managed by following the post treatment care instructions. Small scabs may appear on the skin but can be covered up with make up the next day.
What Are The Risks Of Skin Needling?
Risks associated with medical skin needling are minimal but can include dry skin or slight discolouration post-treatment. Any side effects of Collagen Induction Therapy should subside within a week or so. However there are occasional side effects, which include:
- Oozing and swelling during the recovery phase.
- Skin infection with bacteria (rare) or herpes simplex virus (cold sores).
- Milia, which can be easily removed.
- Acne flare, which is usually mild.
What is the difference between a Dermapen and Dermaroller?
At Aatman Wellness & Medispa we use the Dermapen for all skin needling treatments. A study conducted by Chu , shows that the dermaroller is quite painful compared to Dermapen, and any post-needling erythema and/or oedema tend to last about four days, creating unwanted downtime. The character of the micro-wounds seen with the dermal roller is much more traumatic to the skin; instead of a rapid vertical needle insertion and withdrawal, dermal rollers dig into the skin and create more of a tearing wound, and may be responsible for the longer downtime. The dermapen also has greater reduction of scarring than the dermaroller. The dermaroller also relies more on the operator in relation to results therefore can vary greatly. Overall, Dermapen achieves better results with greater comfort to the client.
